Step all the way in please, and make room for everyone. There's no turning back now...</itunes:summary>

Savoring this episode from the beginning of December would have been nice, but I took a little extra time to make sure this one had a few extra stops pulled out. It is Christmas, after all.

This is the second ever Christmas edition of The Swinging Wake, brought to you by request and proposal of Chrome Skin Jesus of The Razor Blade Dance Floor - you'll understand when you listen.

There are special surprises like visitation upon rarely exploited segments and a couple harry, wassailing friends that drop by.

This is an episode that will live in infamy.
Submitted for your approval is an episode in which I contribute little more than white-russian-fueled rambling and hung-over complaints while my esteemed colleagues, Dominus Maximus and Neil Hatefuture, provide all the music.

White, Orange And Green

So St. Patrick's Day is here again, and my annual tradition for this day never varies: I'll be purchasing a couple six-packs of Guiness and watching "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" followed by "The Quiet Man."

Sean Connery and Janet Munro (scene from Darby O'Gill)

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara (scene from The Quiet Man)

This episode does indeed have a sharp Irish theme to it, but due to my busy schedule I had to cut it a bit short. Think of it as the Fun Size edition of The Swinging Wake.

Anyway, enjoy the show and stay away from the green beer. Drink stout.

As I write this it is six days until the release of "Watchmen" the film. I'm surprised at how much I am looking forward to the release of this adaptation, as I haven't had any enthusiasm about a current cinematic release since "The Dark Knight." I was originally skeptical about this film, the original Alan Moore work being generally considered unfilmable. But every review I've read and every second of footage I've seen suggests that this thing is right on the money.

So you can count on this: the day it comes out, March 6th, I will be there at my local theatre for my traditional "pajama matinee." What on earth is this? you may be asking. Listen to the episode and you'll understand.

This week we have a couple songs and a couple stories by Mr Neil Gaiman. The reason for the format this time is explained in the episode.

Turn off the lights and take a journey with me into the dark dimensions of Gaiman's universe.

Walking With Shadows

This episode introduces a new feature I'm calling "Stop Raping My Childhood." Those of you who feel, for example, that George Lucas long ago became more machine than man should appreciate it.

Not that this has anything to do with the episode directly, but while I'm on the subject, has anyone else come to realize that Darth Vader is merely an autobiographical representation of George Lucas himself? He begins as a young, ambitious talent with apparently limitless potential. He shakes things up, while trying to find his way. But in the end, he becomes so consumed by his need to push the boundaries of cinema that he loses his way entirely, forgets what he sought out to do in the first place. Annakin Skywalker was convinced by Palpatine to destroy the Jedi entirely. Some dark force eventually convinced Lucas to wage war against film itself, and by proxy, attempt to destroy cinema. His armor - his digital ones and zeros - seem to be all that's left. The storyteller is gone.

Anyway, enjoy the show.

Gothball 2009: Are You In Or Out?

We're going through with this. The decision was made on October 3rd, 2008.

I was drinking with anger while watching Game Two of the Divisional Playoffs. The Halos were being knocked out of the first round yet again by the Bahstin Chowderheads, the 21st century's magnetic pole for bandwagon yahoos and goatee pilots.

I was sitting on the floor nursing bottle number three (or so). Kat was lying on the sofa, passively observing another abysmal postseason.

"I can play baseball," she said, offhandedly.

"Really?" I replied. "That settles it. We're doing this. I've got to have something to redeem this travesty."

"Doing what?"

"We're doing Gothball in winter or spring of 2009."

I've wanted to do this for a long time. In fact, I drafted this notice a month ago. No more waiting.

The name could just have easily been 'Punkball' or 'Rivetball' or 'Postmodernball.' There's no alteration of the rules, nothing particularly 'Goth' about it at all, save for how my contemporaries tend to dress. In the end, it's just baseball with my friends and acquaintances. Same rules, less talent.

"That might be fun, Zoe, but I haven't played since Little League."

Me neither.

"I sucked back then."

Me too.

"I was never in little league."

Doesn't matter.

"I throw like a girl and couldn't hit water if I fell out of a boat."

So?

"No, seriously, I have no talent whatsoever. I'm clumsy, totally unathletic, uncoordinated, and allergic to oxygen."

Then you'll fit right in with everyone else. And if you can think of something better to do on a breezy weekend afternoon besides goofing around with friends while cheering, laughing, pounding Gatorade, and falling on your ass with gusto, then you should do that.

"... Why are you doing this?"

Because this is what I do. I come up with these wacky schemes and ideas, and then I rope all my friends into participating. And as the years go by, they get bigger and weirder. Haven't you figured this out yet?

"... Alright... What do I need to bring?"

A comfortable pair of shoes. And clothing you don't mind horsing around in or getting a pinch dirty. Whether this means jeans and a t-shirt or kilt and a billowy poet's shirt is entirely up to you.

"Do I need to bring equipment of some kind?"

Probably not. I'm going to try to assemble as much equipment as I can. If you already happen to own a glove or bat or something - by all means, bring it.

"Where are we going to do this?"

That part I haven't figured out yet. Somewhere in the 714 are code, probably. Most baseball diamonds I've come across are fenced off and fairly inaccessible. I'm still trying to find an open, readily accessible field we can use. Suggestions are very welcome.

"Can I invite some friends to participate?"

Does the Pope poop in the woods? Recruit everyone you can. I have to assemble two teams - we'll need a minimum of 19 people.

"Okay, what now?"

Now I'm going to take a tally of wiling participants. Email me at ZoeNecrosis at Yahoo dot com. I also need to know whether you are right or left-handed.

So... are you in or out?

Season's Grievings!

It's time for the first ever Christmas episode of The Swinging Wake! If anyone wants to know what Zoe wants for Christmas, I would really love a Fraggle Stick Car. Please tell Santa.

Besides the latest episode, which is ready to be enjoyed, I've got a couple presents for you.

Firstly, a ballad by The King of Terrifying Bullets:

And here's a few other random things simply to enjoy:

Alright, enough of that. Hopefully you're in the Christmas spirit by now.

Enjoy the episode.

"I think it's dark and it looks like rain"
You said
"And the wind is blowing like it's the end of the world"
You said
"And it's so cold
It's like the cold if you were dead"
And then you smiled
For a second

Check this shit out:

My friend Vince made it for the show. He said he created it by listening to a marathon run of The Swinging Wake and composed as he went, the current playlist at any given moment dictating the direction the image digressed to.

Dave McKeane used a similar technique when creating the cover art to Skinny Puppy's "Brap" album, and the result was this:

Anyway, if you would like to use Vince's new artwork to help promote The Swinging Wake, just copy and paste the text below into your myspace or blog or whatever.

Are Freaks Electric?

When I started recording this episode, as my banter will indicate, I anticipated that my haste would result in a less than satisfactory result. After completing it, however, I found that I like it a great deal.

We'll attribute this result to my indulging in a what-do-I-have-to-lose assemblage of materials.

You're going to hear industrial by Numb, the soundtrack to a robotic lesbian love story, a grisly tale of murder and deceit by Neil Gaiman, and be sent away with a tragic ballad by Mr Marty Robbins.

Me? I'm right now on the road, as you can see from the preceding post.

And oh yeah, IT'S OCTOBER, BABY!

God I hope this is nothing like last year. If it is, you will find me a sad Zoe until Spring.

If it isn't like last year, drinks are on me.

Hey kids.

As you can see, episode 13 is not here yet. I had a plan to get it recorded, but my roommate ended up with a marathon illness, which played itself out on the living room couch for a couple days watching SVU dvds at full volume. So naturally I could not record.

Therefore I am putting together the next episode and programming it to publish on the 1st of October.

I will not be here at this time, but rather on the road. Violet DeMent and I are taking a road trip up the coast.

Stops will include:

July 2009?!

The next episode of The Swinging Wake will appear on or around September 1st. I have not had a chance to record an episode in time for my usual biweekly installment. When the next episode appears I intend to redouble my efforts to publish and popularize this thingamajig.

This will give you all a chance to catch up on an episode you may have missed or skipped over. Or not.
It occurs to me, however, that this is my very own dot com, and I can do whatever I want with it, really. So why don't I?

So in the meantime, here are a few other interesting things to note of late:

As you may have heard, Warner Brothers is pushing back the release date for The Half-Blood Prince from November of this year to July of 2009... double-you-tee-eff-question-mark-exclamation-point

The reasoning behind this is that Warner has, admittedly, jack shit to put out during summer of next year, and figure they can wrangle more summer vacation money that way.

Across the world, cosplayers and normal people alike are thinking the same thing:

AVADA KEDRAVRA!

Moving on.

Here's something weird I ran across, that is apparently real: this is how they ride motorcycles on the freeway in India.

Have you ever heard of Failblog dot org? Well, here's a few recent choice selections from this webpage, which I check daily...

Knives And Lint

Hello everyone. Welcome aboard the eleventh episode.

So, yeah. Dark Knight was pretty freaking amazing, huh?

A few notes on this installment of SwingingWakeRadio.com

Firstly, on an embarrassing note, I make several mentions in this episode of an athlete named Mark Teixeira. I'd only seen his name in print until an hour after I finished recording this thing, so I keep pronouncing it something to the effect of Tex-uh-ree-uh. Not even close. His name is actually pronounced Tuh-shee-ruh. Yeah, I'm a total shinebox on that one.

Secondly, I discuss how weird the trailer for the Frank Miller directed "The Spirit" is. And for your reference, here it is:

And just for good measure, here's the Half-Blood Prince teaser. Just for fun.

Okay, get to the listening. Bear in mind I've been trying to fight off a cold, so the Nyquilada cocktails made me kind of loopy.

Have a good night.

A Study In Emerald

This week on The Swinging Wake, Neil Gaiman brings us "A Study in Emerald."

I wouldn't steer you wrong, and neither would Neil (knowingly).

These are the principle players in tonight's intrigue:

Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective. Hobbies: violin, cocaine.

Dr. James Watson. Occupation: pensioner, sidekick.

Professor Moriarty. Arch-Villain. M'wa-ha-ha.

Colonel Sebastian Moran. Also Evil. But Not As Notorious As Moriarty.

Cthulhu. Destroyer of Worlds.

The Great Old Ones. Also Bad News.

If you are feeling brave, click on the "POD" icon up above or the "direct download" link below. Both take you to the same foreboding destination.

The back alleys and fogbound streets of London await. And they'll be expecting me...

I'll see you all a little later...

Hello Lovelies,

The next episode of The Swinging Wake will be a bit late. I don't know just how much. I haven't had much time to record or prepare lately. I'll explain why later.

Just know that I'm working on it and I'll have it up in no time at all. Check back in a few days.

Welcome to an especially rollicking edition of SwingingWakeRadio.com

This episode, in my opinion, is especially choice. All the musical tracks are excellent and the mix flows serendipitously well.

I really need to expand the audience base of this show. We need more listeners. If you enjoy the show, you can help. It would help keep this crazy thing going. And you don't have to do much.

I'm going to display a few images, and follow each with the html code which you can copy and paste. Put it in your blog, on your livejournal, your myspace profile, whatever you can think of. Every reference helps a tremendous amount.

Pick what you find prettiest!

iTunes Has Accepted Our Show!

It's a proud, proud day.

iTunes has at long last accepted The Swinging Wake into the iTunes store.

That means we're now searchable. We're legit.

You can view our iTunes profile and subscribe to us right HERE.

I have a special, important request of everyone that likes this show and wants to see it continue...

If you are one of the people that has subscribed to this show via iTunes using one of the clever little links I cooked up in earlier posts, please delete it and re-subscribe from our iTunes profile.

Why on Earth should you do this? Because unless you are subscribed from our official iTunes page, it doesn't feed our stats. And iTunes has an intimidating auto-unsubscribe feature that could drop us if we don't keep our numbers up.

So if you are already using the iTunes and has love for Zoe, please do the following:

1. Open your iTunes>Podcast section.
2. Delete The Swinging Wake from your subscriptions. Delete. Do not just unsubscribe.
3. Go to this link:
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=276813139 and click 'subscribe.' (You have to have iTunes loaded already.)
4. If you want to be especially awesome, leave us a glowing review while you're there. With lots of stars. I'll be your best friend.

Then again, if you're one of the people who listen directly from this page, continue to do so.

Go Away White?

We got a mention recently on episode 50 (part 2) of Razor Blade Dance Floor. The host, Chrome-Skin Jesus, lauded it as being "crazy." I was absolutely tickled.

If you like hard-hitting, aggressive electro-industrial, this show is for you.

It reminds me very much of The Necrobotic Dance Party, the industrial college radio show I used to do back in the day.

And there we are. This is the better part of a decade ago... how young we look. The redhead in the foreground was my partner in crime, the infamous Pandora Killjoy. The CD she's holding looks like Velvet Acid Christ's "Twisted Thought Generator" album. That's me on the right, fielding a phone-in request and squinting because my contacts hurt and I've been awake for 24 hours at this point.

In other news... there's a new Bauhaus album out. Yup. You heard me.

And you know what? It sucks ass.

It's called "Go Away White." I'm not even going to bother trying to research the meaning of the title or speculate. There is not one listenable track on the entire album. And it doesn't even sound like Bauhaus, it sounds like a Peter Murphy solo album, only without those two or three good songs.

This is their first release since 1983, and decidedly their last. Apparently while recording this album there was "an incident," the nature of which has not been disclosed. But they all decided they would disband permanently, and there would be no tour to support the album, and Bauhaus will not perform together again. This, in effect, was a way of ending the existence of Bauhaus, only instead of with fanfare, celebration and dignity, with a mediocre fart of an offering.

This is an abortion of an album that should be scraped off the hanger and flushed.

But anyway...

Hey, if somehow, some way you have come here to this website NOT via my Myspace page, mosie on over and add me. Let's be friends.

Enjoy Episode 3.

The Spirits Are Received A Faldric Numbrage...

Episode II begins with me bitching about the Oscars; it's all downhill from there.

You'll hear industrial, vampiric goth, rare recordings of the late, great Paul Frees, and my own miscellaneous musings on whatever comes to mind, along with a futile attempt to make more people into fans of anachronistic cowboy music.

I found out at the last second that the program I've been using has a time limit of exactly 1 hour and 6 minutes per episode, so unfortunately my roommate's Word Of The Day segment was cut off, and will have to be postponed until the next episode.

I'm beginning a new segment on the show called Ask Dr. Vertigo - he's kind of like Dear Abbey or any other advice columnist, only his advice isn't always sound.

So if you have a problem, dilemma, difficult decision, or need advice for any reason, write to me: zoenecrosis@yahoo.com, and I'll forward your questions along to Dr. Vertigo, who will be more than glad to... help.

Incidentally, I forgot to announce the last song I played on the show. I had to throw on something shorter than a minute. In case you're wondering, it's by Elliot Goldenthal, and it is called "Lestat's Tarantelle."

Enough introduction. Step all the way in please, and make room for everyone...

Here you see me between NeilHateFuture (left) and Dominus Maximus (right)

I had a rollicking, bully-good time. And if you cruise over to their site and listen to episode 5, you will probably also have a good time (at least with the intermissions if you don't go in for aggro-music). I do alright on my own, but I'm ten times better when I have other people to riff off of - so you'll get to hear me in prime form on this show.

A brief disclaimer, though: white russians and hefe weizen were imbibed. And we (okay, I) got more than a little belligerent.

What's All This, Then?

"So, Zoe, what am I supposed to do with this thing? How does it work?"

Actually, there are numerous ways to enjoy The Swinging Wake. You could listen directly from SwingingWakeRadio.com by simply clicking on the POD icon seen next to the title of the latest episode (see the header of the first entry, below). Even if this isn't your preferred option, this website will be in continuous development and feature whimsical mirth not found in the feed by itself, so it's worth it to check back often.

If you would like to listen with iTunes you can do so by opening it and then clicking right here. You will then be subscribed.

That's not the only option, however.

You can add it to your Zune (if Zune Marketplace 2.0 is installed) by clicking <a href="zune://subscribe/?The Swinging Wake=http://swingingwakeradio.com/rss>here
Add to My Yahoo! by clicking <a href=">here
Add to Google Reader by clicking here
Add to Rojo by clicking here
Add to Newsgator by clicking here
Add to Bloglines by clicking here
Add to Netvibes by clicking <a href="http://www.netvibes.com/subscribe.php?type=rss&url=http://swingingwakeradio.com/rss>here
Add to Pageflakes by clicking <a href=">here
Or add it to anything that takes an rss feed by using the url swingingwakeradio.com/rss

What's the best way to enjoy this? That's a matter of personal preference, but I, being fussy, have an opinion. If you have decent speakers hooked up to your computer and spend time on the interweb, feel free to listen through this page. Otherwise? I would suggest treating said podcast in a literal sense and listening to it with your iPod. Synch it up from your iTunes and listen to it at night before you go to sleep (now everyone can take Zoe to bed with them!) I'm trying very hard to make the entire hour of each episode entertaining from front to back.

In other news: this morning I cooked up a very simple sort of flyer to use to pester my friends on the Myspace.

I'm sure most of you could do better. And if you feel so inclined, please do! I'm going to need banners and icons and things like that in the days to come. What you see above is the best I can do with the programs and ability at my disposal.

If you're not photoshop inclined, please feel free to pimp me out! The more I get the word out the more fun it will be.

Speaking of fun - many of my friends were once a part of my old radio show. You're invited to be a part of it once again; once I get a few more episodes under my belt and know what I'm doing a bit better.

Magical Neil and Dom had me over to guest DJ on their program, Power Forge Radio a couple days ago. However, due to the size of the show they won't be able to publish the episode until the 27th at the earliest. The show turned out fantastically, though, and as soon as it's online I'll let you all know.

Till then...

How To Subscribe Via iTunes

The Swinging Wake is not searchable in the iTunes Store at this time. I do not know if this will ever be remedied.

However, there is an absurdly easy and simple way to subscribe to The Swinging Wake with your iTunes. How, you ask?

Simply click here

Of course, you probably need to have iTunes already open (not to mention loaded) for it to work. You will not leave this webpage.

Now, I'm still experimenting here. But I'm pretty confidant that if you click this link you'll be set up such that new episodes of The Swinging Wake will automatically download into your iTunes. If you're new to the concept of subscribing to a podcast, don't worry, it won't eat up your hard drive space. Your default settings in iTunes are probably set to only keep the newest show and erase the previous. If you're not sure, just click on the 'Settings' tab on your iTunes Podcast menu.

If for some odd reason the above link doesn't do the trick, try these simple steps:

1. Open iTunes
2. Go to "Advanced"
3. Click on "Subscribe to Podcast"
4. Enter "http://www.swingingwakeradio.com/rss" into the text box that appears.
5. Click "OK"
6. Send nudes to Zoe Necrosis

[Edit: not only do I now have my very own url - swingingwakeradio.com - but I've also aquired a new, higher-quality microphone. My next show will sound a thousand times better. 2/22/08 13:23]

And so it begins.

To quote the phrase of our age, "this site is under construction."

You're here at the beginning. It will all be much prettier in time. The show, nonetheless, is something I've been waiting to put out into the ether for a long time, and I hope you'll enjoy it, and come back for more.

There's enough introduction in the show itself to explain what I'm doing here. I'll leave you to it.
Please remain seated until the program comes to a complete stop.
On with the show.
